AI is dangerous and frightening in so many ways. AI is going to destroy our jobs and our economy. I just had an AI experience that was a real eye-opener. This just happened a couple of days ago. I was recruited for a job. So I submitted my resume. The HR person in charge said my resume was not accepted because it was NOT AI generated and the AI system could not pick up on certain aspects of my resume. I have copied his exact wording here.
“Thank you for your application. Unfortunately, after running your resume through our automated screening system, we’re unable to move forward with your candidacy at this time. A few concerns were flagged during the initial review, and I’d like to walk you through them:
1. Bullet Point Length:
Some bullet points in your resume exceeded the ideal two-line limit. Our system is optimized for concise, scannable information, and longer entries can be misinterpreted or overlooked by the parser, impacting readability and scoring.
2. Consulting Experience Presentation:
The way your consulting experience is currently framed led the system to interpret it as a potential employment gap. While we understand the value of this experience, automated tools often lack the nuance to correctly assess non-traditional roles, which can unfortunately result in automatic disqualification.
3. Missing Keywords:
Your resume lacked certain keywords and phrases, such as “passion for Microsoft” or direct references to the company’s mission—that the system uses to gauge alignment with company culture and values. While these may seem superficial, they play a critical role in automated evaluations.
These issues are more reflective of the system’s limitations than your qualifications. However, they did prevent your resume from progressing to the next stage.
This is scary indeed. If people don’t match up exactly to what AI is looking for, regardless of their qualifications, they are not even considered.
