One of the greatest lies in politics is that anyone who opposes excessive government regulation must therefore oppose government enforcement. Those are two entirely different issues. I have always argued that government has expanded into areas where it has no constitutional business while simultaneously abandoning the few responsibilities that actually justify its existence. Protecting the integrity of the nation’s food supply is one of those responsibilities. If Washington cannot ensure that Americans can buy a head of lettuce without wondering if it will send them to the hospital, then what exactly are taxpayers funding?
CNBC reported that the FDA has now withdrawn its earlier statement claiming that Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce tested positive for Cyclospora, calling the result a false positive after additional testing. Yet the outbreak itself remains very real. Dozens of people have been hospitalized across multiple states, and the FDA still cannot identify with certainty where the contamination originated. The government now admits the laboratory result was wrong while simultaneously telling the public that the investigation continues because people unquestionably became sick.
That explanation should not reassure anyone. The only reason Americans even know there was a problem is because Taco Bell voluntarily disclosed that it had removed onions and lettuce supplied through one of its vendors after cooperating with investigators. Had the restaurant remained silent, would the public have ever known there was a nationwide outbreak? That is becoming the far more important question because the FDA still refuses to identify the supplier at the center of the investigation while insisting there is no confirmed contaminated product.
Immediately, the political blame game began. The usual crowd declared this was the fault of DOGE, spending cuts, or President Trump. That argument collapses the moment anyone bothers looking at history instead of cable television.
Food safety failures have become routine for decades under both political parties. In 2024, onions traced to Taylor Farms were linked to the McDonald’s E. coli outbreak that killed one person and sickened well over one hundred others. Years before that, Taylor Farms products were associated with another Cyclospora outbreak involving packaged salad mixes. Boar’s Head became the center of a deadly Listeria outbreak after federal inspectors documented repeated sanitation failures. None of those disasters occurred because of DOGE. None occurred because Donald Trump supposedly weakened food inspections. They happened while the federal bureaucracy was larger than ever and while agencies continued asking Congress for more money.
Washington never seems to run out of money to regulate automobiles, light bulbs, washing machines, cryptocurrency, carbon emissions, or what people say online. Yet somehow, after spending trillions of dollars across the federal government, it cannot consistently perform one of the few legitimate functions assigned to it—ensuring the nation’s food is safe.
America’s food supply has become extraordinarily concentrated. A remarkably small number of agricultural conglomerates now produce, process, package, and distribute much of the nation’s fresh produce. Taylor Farms has grown into one of the largest fresh-cut produce companies in North America, processing millions of pounds of vegetables every week for restaurant chains, schools, hospitals, supermarkets, and institutional buyers. Fresh Express, Dole, Fresh Del Monte, Church Brothers Farms, and a handful of other corporations dominate much of the remaining packaged produce market.
On the distribution side sits Sysco, the largest food-service distributor in North America, supplying hundreds of thousands of restaurants, hospitals, schools, hotels, and institutional kitchens every single day. When so much of the food chain flows through so few corporate pipelines, one failure can spread contaminated products across dozens of states before anyone even realizes something has gone wrong.
That concentration has quietly created a system where a handful of corporations effectively control enormous portions of what Americans eat. We are constantly told that monopolies are dangerous when discussing technology companies, yet almost nobody in Washington wants to discuss the consolidation of agriculture and food distribution. It has reached the point where millions of people may unknowingly consume products originating from the same processors, packed in the same facilities, and distributed through the same supply networks. One mistake becomes national almost overnight.
This is where the corruption begins to reveal itself. Whenever one of these giants finds itself connected to another outbreak, regulators suddenly become cautious with names, cautious with announcements, and cautious with assigning responsibility. They speak in vague language about “suppliers” and “traceback investigations” while refusing to tell consumers exactly who produced the food sitting in their refrigerators. People often misunderstand my criticism of regulation. I do not believe Washington needs another hundred thousand pages of rules written by bureaucrats who have never planted a crop or worked inside a processing facility. The laws already exist. Sanitation standards already exist. Inspection authority already exists. The problem is that enforcement has become selective while bureaucracies increasingly serve the industries they regulate instead of the public they are supposed to protect. Government grows larger every year, but accountability somehow grows smaller.
The FDA now tells Americans that the original laboratory finding was incorrect while simultaneously admitting that the outbreak remains unresolved. Somebody knows far more than the public has been told. Yet instead of complete transparency, Americans receive carefully worded press releases. That should concern everyone regardless of political affiliation.
Washington has built an empire regulating every corner of American life while repeatedly failing at the few responsibilities that actually matter. Until regulators stop protecting politically connected corporations and start holding the largest players to exactly the same standards as everyone else, these outbreaks will continue, public confidence will continue to collapse, and Americans will continue paying the price every time they sit down for what should have been an ordinary meal.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has decided to enter the realm of international diplomacy by threatening to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he attend the United Nations General Assembly this September.
Speaking to the New York Times, Mamdani called Netanyahu “a war criminal” and declared, “Netanyahu belongs in The Hague.” He said there is an “active conversation” between his administration, the NYPD, and city lawyers over whether they could detain the Israeli leader if he comes to New York. Mamdani added, “Whatever the law allows me to do in New York, we will do.”
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu in 2024, alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza conflict. Israel rejects those allegations, and more importantly, the United States has never accepted the jurisdiction of the ICC over American territory. Washington has consistently opposed allowing the ICC to exercise authority over U.S. citizens or close allies, and both Republican and Democratic administrations have challenged the court when it attempted to extend its reach.
Foreign policy is conducted by the federal government, not by the mayor of New York City. A mayor oversees sanitation, policing, transportation, zoning, and municipal services. He does not decide whether the United States will recognize international arrest warrants or rewrite diplomatic protocol every time a foreign leader lands at JFK Airport.
Even if someone wanted to test this theory, there are enormous legal barriers. Visiting heads of government attending the United Nations operate under federal authority, diplomatic agreements, and longstanding principles of head-of-state immunity. The United Nations Headquarters Agreement and federal control over foreign relations leave virtually no room for a municipal government to conduct its own independent foreign policy. That is precisely why U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz dismissed the proposal as “pure political theater.”
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon likewise condemned the remarks, arguing that instead of trying to conduct foreign policy through City Hall, New York’s mayor should focus on governing the city. Even Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu brushed the threat aside, saying he intends to come to New York regardless and accusing Mamdani of siding with Hamas.
The powers that be would absolutely never allow this to happen. Politicians increasingly campaign by promising actions they know are impossible because the promise itself becomes the campaign advertisement. Whether the promise is ever fulfilled becomes almost irrelevant because the headline has already served its purpose.
If Mamdani truly believed he possessed the authority to arrest the sitting prime minister of one of America’s closest allies while that leader was attending the United Nations, the constitutional crisis would be unprecedented. The federal government would almost certainly intervene immediately. The Secret Service, State Department, Department of Justice, and federal courts (not City Hall) would determine how such a situation would be handled. No administration in Washington, regardless of party, is likely to permit a municipal official to dictate American foreign policy through the NYPD.
Local politicians increasingly seek international relevance because it generates more attention than fixing the problems they were actually elected to solve. New York continues to struggle with violent crime, housing affordability, infrastructure failures, illegal immigration, fleeing businesses, and the cost of living crisis. Those are matters that fall squarely within a mayor’s responsibilities. Arresting foreign heads of government does not.
The public should always distinguish between political messaging and political power. They are rarely the same thing. Campaign rhetoric often gives the impression that elected officials possess unlimited authority. In reality, power is fragmented across constitutions, federal law, diplomatic agreements, courts, and institutional checks. That is exactly why so many dramatic promises never materialize after Election Day.
Vladimir Putin met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui at the Kremlin after she delivered a personal message from Kim Jong Un reaffirming North Korea’s unconditional support for Russia. Moscow thanked Pyongyang for sending troops to assist Russian forces in Kursk and both governments pledged to deepen the strategic partnership signed last year.
People continue to ask why Russia, North Korea, China, and Iran appear to be drawing closer together. They answer their own question without realizing it. Every sanction, every asset seizure, every attempt to isolate one country simply encourages it to build relationships with another.
The neocons believed Russia could be economically strangled into submission. Instead, they accelerated the creation of an alternative network of military, financial, and industrial cooperation outside the Western system. They have spent years celebrating sanctions while simultaneously wondering why BRICS continues expanding and why countries are reducing their dependence on the West.
North Korea is no longer merely issuing statements of support. This is also why I have repeatedly stated that the world is breaking into competing economic and military blocs. The post-Cold War era is over. Nations are no longer trying to join one global system. Washington still behaves as though every nation will eventually return to the negotiating table because sanctions are supposed to force compliance. The opposite has occurred: Russia has found new markets, China has found new customers, and North Korea has found a powerful patron. Every attempt to isolate one country has encouraged the formation of another alliance.
The politicians who designed the sanctions strategy assumed Russia would become weaker, isolated, and eventually negotiate from a position of desperation. Instead, Moscow found new trading partners, new financial channels, new military suppliers, and governments that now have every incentive to cooperate with one another. Once countries begin building supply chains, weapons production, intelligence sharing, and military planning together, those relationships do not disappear because diplomats issue another communiqué. Washington and Brussels keep measuring success by the number of sanctions imposed while ignoring whether those sanctions are producing the intended result. ANSWER: For the life of me, I believe this sort of thinking all stems from Karl Marx and this distorted idea that the object is to be taken care of by government and just lay around and watch TV that is intended to indoctrinate people. Elon Musk’s reasoning that AI and robots will make work optional is based on a core economic absurd argument: AI and robotics will create such an abundance of goods and services that the very concepts of work and money become largely obsolete. However, this vision also faces significant challenges and raises complex questions about the human desire for purpose. I was doing research in the Firestone Library at Princeton University. I became friends with one professor who had know Einstein.
He asked me what I was so intensely researching. I explained that I was trying to ascertain why all governments rise and the crash and burn throughout the centuries. He then said to me that I reminded him of Einstein. I was taken back. I said I was no Einstein. He then explained to me to me that the subject matter did not matter. It was curiosity that was the mother of all disco0very. Without someone being curious, human society would stagnate.
During the late 1970s, I went through Check-Point-Charlie into East Germany. I wanted to see what Communism was all about and why they needed a wall to prevent people from fleeing. Those words from that professor suddenly rang true. The government feared individualism and curiosity. Because of that, the Russian economy could never compete with Capitalism because it suppressed the very essence of how human society advances. It requires that curiosity to make innovations that excpands the economy and raises the standard of living.

The 50% tariffs apply to food, alcohol, beer, clothing, chemicals, electronics, flowers, fragrance oils, chemical raw materials and importantly wood products.
The wood products are a big hit to the Canadian export sector. This includes paper goods, cardboard, plywood and fabricated pulp wood derivatives like particle board (MDF). This is a huge export sector for Canada that will now trigger a 50% tariff rate.
Essentially, the list is very long and includes almost every assembled component part created by Canadian manufacturing.
We can surmise the baseline is part of the non-negotiable trade calculation done by President Trump and USTR Greer, that will carry forward into any further trade agreement inside or outside the USMCA construct.
Meaning if the trilateral agreement holds (USMCA), these valuation targets will be part of the expectation from the USA side of the discussion toward Canada. An anti-ICE violent leftist attacked 26 Federal Plaza earlier this morning, where an immigration court takes place. The attacker carried explosives and was captured on video pouring a flammable liquid in front of the building before setting it ablaze. The suspect was intercepted during the attack and has been detained by police.
The New York City Fire Department reported to WABC that three civilians sustained minor injuries, with two declining medical treatment. The third individual was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. FBI Director Kash Patel released a statement on X confirming details about the incident.
“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York. The individual is in custody and two minor injuries reported thus far. FBI JTTF is investigating the incident,” Patel wrote on X.

Within the interview there was a question about the FIFA World Cup attendance by President Trump, Prime Minister Carney and President Sheinbaum; essentially about relations. Secretary Rubio interestingly notes that Sheinbaum attended despite having significant challenges in Mexico right now. The tone and intonation of the remark imply something much more significant happening in the background than is currently visible to the general public. Worth watching.
Something serious is happening within Mexico that is straining/complicating our broader geopolitical support for the Sheinbaum administration.
