The point to the electoral college is very simple; the United states is a Constitutional Republic not a democracy. The individual States created the Federal government after the individual States citizens voted to do do. To prevent a few large states from dominating the presidential election the founders created the system that we now have including the electoral college. To eliminate the electoral college you would really need to eliminate the states.

I have no idea why Obama is poking the bear it is not logical and the us is no long the major power in the world.
