Unemployment Growing Among Chinese Youth

Armstrong Economics Blog/China Re-Posted Jul 15, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

Unemployment among the youth (16-24) in China has reached a record high of 18.4%. Unemployment is drastically more prevalent in this demographic compared to the nation as a whole where unemployment sits at 5.9%. Youth unemployment tends to be higher in most nations, with the US posting a 7.8% unemployment rate for the youth and the European Union reaching 13.9%. While our models indicate that China is on the rise, the strain on the labor force will slow the trajectory.

The Bank of America believes youth unemployment in China will rise to 23% in the coming months. They also believe unemployment for the nation as a whole will continue to rise. Young people flock to the cities for employment, and there are simply not enough jobs to meet demand. The requirements to enter college surpass most nation’s standards and numerous teens have taken to social media to complain about the harsh selection process.

China is now encouraging new graduates to seek work in the less desirable countryside, as over 10 million students are set to graduate in the coming weeks. The government is offering incentives to those who choose to work in the country as well.

“For college graduates who start a business in the field of urban and rural community services, policies such as preferential taxes and fees, one-time entrepreneurship subsidies, and guaranteed loans for entrepreneurship shall be implemented in according with regulations,” The Ministries of Education, Finance, Civil Affairs, and Human Resources and Social Security stated. Businesses in these areas that agree to hire new graduates will receive government incentives as well.

The problem began with the pandemic and lockdowns. The zero COVID policy rule has slowed China’s progress toward becoming the financial capital of the world. Small businesses, and businesses in rural areas, were especially affected by the lockdown policies. Additionally, hiring in the tech field has declined after President Xi placed new regulations on that sector. The primary jobs offered in the countryside include hospitality, real estate, and healthcare. Options for remote work could increase the ability for the youth to live and contribute to life outside urban areas. China must find a way to employ these new graduates with no prior experience before the situation worsens.

In the Aftermath of Political Violence, Japan Gives Big Election Win to Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in Tribute to Assassinated Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Posted originally on the conservative tree house on July 11, 2022 | Sundance

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan, the party of current Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has scored a major election victory.

The election was held only three days after Shinzo Abe was assassinated, and the results reflect the Japanese people giving Fumio the opportunity to cement the legacy of the man he replaced.   Prime Minister Abe was an advocate for reforming the Japanese pacifist constitution, which has not been modified or amended since 1947.

Current Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, the leader of the LDP, now has a super-majority in the upper house, controlling more than two-thirds of the seats.  Fumio will have this majority for at least three years and will be able to structure amendments to the Japanese constitution, a life-long ambition of Shinzo Abe who was a hawk to the influence of Chinese aggression in the region.

With the people supporting him, Kishida Fumio now has a major mandate to fulfill the legacy of Abe and keep a focus in the economic and security needs of the average Japanese citizen.  This is a rare moment of almost universal control within the Japanese political system.  Western media are writing the typeset with furrowed brows and gritted teeth.  Meanwhile, the Beijing dragon is fuming behind the panda mask.

Washington Post –  Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP, and its coalition partners have secured a two-thirds supermajority in the nation’s parliament, according to Sunday’s election results, a powerful showing that could allow the LDP to carry forward former prime minister Shinzo Abe’s biggest ambitions in the aftermath of his assassination.

The overwhelming victory could usher in at least three years of political stability for Kishida. It would clear the way for him to enact some of the party’s most controversial goals, including increasing defense spending and pursuing Abe’s long-running desire to amend Japan’s pacifist postwar constitution so that Japan can become a stronger global military power.

“When they get ahold of these ‘golden three years’ the focus will be on what the Kishida administration will hammer out,” said Yu Uchiyama, Japanese politics professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. “If the Kishida administration can come up with policies that appeal to the people, there is a strong possibility that the administration will last long-term.” (read more)

NHK NEWS – Japan’s ruling coalition scored a sweeping victory in Sunday’s Upper House election.  The Liberal Democratic Party was able to win more than half the open seats without the help of its coalition partner, Komeito.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on Sunday night said he was grateful for the outcome. He promised to address the biggest issues facing the nation, including the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the soaring cost of living. He vowed to revive the Japanese economy.

The main opposition force, the Constitutional Democratic Party, lost seats in the Upper House under its new leader, Izumi Kenta. He said, “With our party’s approval ratings still low, we need to work on ourselves, and restore support.”

The ruling coalition and two other parties, Nippon Ishin Japan Innovation Party and the Democratic Party for the People, support amending the Constitution.

Together they now control more than two-thirds of the chamber’s seats. (more)

I ain’t gonna lie….

….It still hurts.

[…] Slain former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be laid to rest at a Tuesday funeral attended by close friends and family, according to media reports.

Prior to the funeral, a vigil is scheduled for Monday night, but officials in Japan have not released any plans for a public memorial service for the country’s longest serving prime minister. (more)

El Erian Thinks the FED Will Flip-Flop on Rates in Response to Demand Side Contraction

Posted originally on the conservative tree house on June 17, 2022 | Sundance

Mohamed El-Erian, a Blooomberg Opinion contributor, cracks me up in his efforts to avoid speaking directly.  Generally, El-Erian knows the situation, he was one of the first to identify the issue with inflation in March 2021.   However, he continues avoiding any mention that the U.S. economy is already in a negative position for growth.

Consider this…. In this interview El-Erian says he believes the Fed will flip-flop and lower rates in reaction to what is happening in the economy.  Keep in mind, the only reason for the Fed to reverse rates so quickly is if the economy is already in a demand side contraction and the latest .75% increase in rate is being done into a negative GDP environment.

Of course, the reality is exactly that.  The U.S. economy is already contracting, mostly because of inflation chewing up the supply side, and the Fed is factually raising interest rates into an economy already in a demand side recession.  But everyone must pretend that’s not the case, so here’s El-Erian saying Jerome Powell is going to end up reversing himself, flip-flopping, which doesn’t make sense if you don’t first establish that the economy is right now shrinking as he speaks.  WATCH:

Worse Than Watergate, Seven Members of Steven Colbert Television Crew Arrested Breaking Into Congressional Offices in DC Capitol

“On June 16, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) received a call for a disturbance in the Longworth House Office Building,” Capitol Police said in a statement obtained by the Washington Examiner. “Responding officers observed seven individuals, unescorted and without Congressional ID, in a sixth-floor hallway.” (read more)

Apparently, California congressman Adam Schiff was helping the television crew to break the law.  The group reportedly banged on doors of several Republican offices –  including that of Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, Jim Jordan of Ohio and Lauren Boebert of Colorado — as they allegedly filmed a skit for Colbert’s “Late Show” program that was to center around the January 6 hearings.  The incident was covered by Jesse Watters on his broadcast this evening. WATCH:

Five Down, Five Term Tom Rice Primaried in South Carolina

Posted originally on the conservative tree house on June 14, 2022 | Sundance

The South Carolina republican club keeps an open primary election so they can coordinate with Democrats on key races.  The larger goal is to retain power.  As planned, democrats in/around Charleston voted to support Club candidate Nancy Mace as part of the power control.   However, at least Tom Rice was eliminated in district 07.

(Via Politico) […] Rep. Tom Rice, one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach the former president, lost his primary to Trump-endorsed state Rep. Russell Fry. It’s the first time this year that a Republican impeachment backer has faced a challenger backed by Trump — and the results were emphatic, with Rice’s party support crashing to just a quarter of the vote. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the County Employment and Wages Summary Wednesday [DATA HERE].  The economic tracking measures the employment and wage increases at a county level throughout 343 counties in the nation.

Posted originally on the conservative tree house on May 25, 2022 | Sundance | 158 Comments

The BLS measures the data on an annual basis from December 2020 through December 2021.  The average rate of wage growth at a county level was 5.9%, far lower than the measured 8.5% inflation rate.  That means real wages, the income of most Americans at the county level have dropped.

However, within the data Florida stands out as having the largest number of counties exceeding the national average.  23 Florida counties are included in the BLS tracking.  An incredible 21 out of 23 Florida counties have wage growth that far exceeds the national average. [BLS, Table-1]

Additionally, Florida holds the top spot for the highest annual rate of wage growth in Palm Beach County with 15.6%…. AND… Florida holds the top spot for the highest annual rate of wage growth amid the ten largest counties, with Miami-Dade wage gains of 11.1%. [BLS, Table-2]

Congratulations Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida workers.   You have the rare distinction of having wage growth overall that exceeds the BLS measured level of Biden inflation.   It’s no wonder why so many people are heading to Florida for jobs.

FREEDOM. If you keep it, they will come.
