China “Shocked” By Navarro Appointment, As Trump Team Proposes 10% Import Tariff

Tyler Durden's picture

As the FT first reported yesetrday, in a dramatic development for Sino-US relations, Trump picked Peter Navarro, a Harvard-trained economist and one-time daytrader, to head the National Trade Council, an organization within the White House to oversee industrial policy and promote manufacturing. Navarro, a hardcore China hawk, is the author of books such as “Death by China” and “Crouching Tiger: What China’s Militarism Means for the World” has for years warned that the US is engaged in an economic war with China and should adopt a more aggressive stance, a message that the president-elect sold to voters across the US during his campaign.

In the aftermath of Navarro’s appointment, many were curious to see what China’s reaction would be, and according to the FT, Beijin’s response has been nothing short of “shocked.” To wit:

The appointment of Peter Navarro, a campaign adviser, to a formal White House post shocked Chinese officials and scholars who had hoped that Mr Trump would tone down his anti-Beijing rhetoric after assuming office.

“Chinese officials had hoped that, as a businessman, Trump would be open to negotiating deals,” said Zhu Ning, a finance professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing. “But they have been surprised by his decision to appoint such a hawk to a key post.”

Shortly after the announcement of Navarro’s appointment, the US Office of the Trade Representative yesterday put added more fuel to trade tensions with Chine when it put Alibaba, China’s biggest e-commerce platform, back on its “notorious markets” blacklist of companies accused of being involved in peddling fake goods.

Cui Fan at the China Society of WTO Studies, a think-tank affiliated with China’s commerce ministry, warned that Beijing would respond to any unilateral action by the incoming Trump administration. “China is preparing itself for US trade actions,” he said. “China will respond with counteractions of its own.”

China has found itself on the receiving end of diplomatic chaos for much of the past three weeks, starting with Trump accepting a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen in early December, which defied almost four decades of precedent. It only escalated from there, and culminated with the confiscation of a US marine drone last week, which however, China promptly returned to the US earlier this week.

Trump’s recent rhetoric has given China cause for concern: since the call with Ms Tsai, he has publicly criticized China’s currency policies and island fortifications in the South China Sea. He has questioned Washington’s commitment to the One China policy, and also angered Beijing when he suggested that the confiscated navy drone was “stolen” by a Chinese ship.

Wang told the People’s Daily: “We will lead the way amid a shake-up in global governance and take hold of the situation amid international chaos. We will protect our interests amid intense and complex games.”

Meanwhile, He Weiwen, deputy director of the Center for China and Globalisation, told the FT that Beijing could retaliate against US exports and restrict market access for US companies.

In short, China is angry, and may get its wish to retaliate soon, because as CNN reports (take it with a “real fake news” grain of salt) Trump’s transition team is discussing a proposal to impose tariffs as high as 10% on imports. A senior Trump transition official said Thursday the team is mulling up to a 10% tariff aimed at spurring US manufacturing, which could be implemented via executive action or as part of a sweeping tax reform package they would push through Congress.

According to CNN, Reince Priebus floated a 5% tariff on imports in meetings with key Washington players last week. But the senior transition official who spoke to CNN Thursday on the condition of anonymity said the higher figure is now in play.

Such a move would, if confirmed, would likely send the US hurtling into a trade war with other countries, especially China which is already “shocked” by recent Trump action, while sending the cost of consumer goods in the US even higher. “And it’s causing alarm among business interests and the pro-trade Republican establishment.”

The senior transition official quoted by CNN also said the transition team is beginning to find “common ground” with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, pointing in particular to the border adjustment tax measure included in House Republicans’ “Better Way” tax reform proposal, which would disincentivize imports through tax policy. The border tax, as explained here two days ago, would also lead to trade wars with key trading partners as it is the functional equivalent of a USD devaluation and is represents yet another tax on foreign exports.

Curbing free trade was a central element of Trump’s campaign. He promised to rip up the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada. He also vowed to take a tougher line against other international trading partners, almost always speaking harshly of China but often including traditional US allies such as Japan in his complaint that American workers get the short end of the stick under current trade practices.

And now, if CNN is correct, Trump may be about to follow through with it. The question on everyone’s lips, then, is with China having repeatedly warned it will retaliate if and when the US launched the first salvo in what will clearly be an escalating trade war, just how will China escalate.  One potential way is through its holdings of $1.1 trillion in US Treasuries and various other US assets.

As we reported earlier today, a SAFE official told reporters at a briefing that while China will make “tactical adjustments” on its US debt holdings, Beijing’s long-term investment view on US debt has not changed, and that U.S. Treasuries are China’s long-term strategic investment targets. That, too, may also change quickly.

Trump Names Kellyanne Conway Counselor To The President

Tyler Durden's picture

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Thursday morning that Kellyanne Conway, his former campaign manager who stepped in halfway through the presidential campaign to boost Trump’s victory chances, will serve as counselor to the president when he takes office denying speculation that Conway would have no role in the incoming administration.

According to the statement released by Trump’s transition team, Conway will continue her role as a close adviser to the president-elect, working with senior leadership to “effectively message and execute the Administration’s legislative priorities and actions.”

“Kellyanne Conway has been a trusted advisor and strategist who played a crucial role in my victory. She is a tireless and tenacious advocate of my agenda and has amazing insights on how to effectively communicate our message. I am pleased that she will be part of my senior team in the West Wing,” Trump said.

“A Trump presidency will bring real change to Washington and to Americans across this great nation. I am humbled and honored to play a role in helping transform the movement he has led into a real agenda of action and results,” Conway added.

As the Hill adds, Conway previously turned down a position as the president-elect’s press secretary, and was rumored to be taking an external position working for the Trump administration. “My family is going to move to Washington D.C. and I will either stay outside and run the political super structure or I will go into the West Wing and take a position right next to the president where I feel like I can serve him in the way I advise him off-camera, which is most of the advice and counsel I give,” she said on Tuesday, hinting at a her new role as a counselor.

Conway was the first female campaign manager of either major party to win a presidential general election.

College Student Earns 4.0 GPA, Then Drops Out: “You Are Being Scammed!”

Submitted by Lance Schuttler via TheMindUnleashed.com,

Billy Williams just finished his first college semester and did so with the all-impressive 4.0 GPA. Instead of celebrating his accomplishments with friends and family, he decided to drop out of college entirely.

willson

Billy made a facebook post that is now going viral in which he explains his reasoning for dropping out:

“Now that I’ve finished my first semester I think it’s safe to say… FUCK COLLEGE. Now before all you of you go batshit crazy… I have a few points to make.

1. Yes I have dropped out after finishing my first semester (with a 4.0 GPA). And it’s one of the best choices I’ve ever made. Not because I am averse to learning, but actually the exact opposite.

2. YOU ARE BEING SCAMMED. You may not see it today or tomorrow, but you will see it some day. Heck you may have already seen it if you’ve been through college. You are being put thousands into debt to learn things you will never even use. Wasting 4 years of your life to be stuck at a paycheck that grows slower than the rate of inflation. Paying $200 for a $6 textbook. Being taught by teacher’s who have never done what they’re teaching. Average income has increased 5x over the last 40 years while cost of college has increased 18x. You’re spending thousands of dollars to learn information you won’t ever even use just to get a piece of paper. I once even had an engineer tell me “I learned more in my first 30 days working than in my 5 years of college.” What does that tell you about this system? There are about a million more ways you’re being scammed into this.. just watch the video i’m gonna comment if you want to see more.

3. Colleges are REQUIRING people to spend money taking gen. ed. courses to learn about the quadratic formula (and other shit they will never use) when they could be giving classes on MARRIAGE and HOW TO DO YOUR TAXES.

4. Gosh there are so many more reasons I could add, but just comment if you disagree or have reasons to add. I’d love to add to the discussion. TAG a friend in college, Tag your parents, share this if you agree, disagree. Let’s just talk about it. Heck post a picture of yourself flipping off something you think is unjust in our society.”

Billy is right too that the price of college continues to soar.

Ray Franke, a professor of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston said:

“If you look at the long-term trend of college tuition, it has been rising almost six percent above the rate of inflation. That’s brought immense pressure from the media and general public, asking whether college is still worth it.

In 2015, Harvard’s annual tuition and fees (not including room and board) would cost a person $45,278, which is more than 17 times the 1971-72 cost. If annual increases of tuition had simply tracked the inflation rate since 1971, 2016’s tuition would be just $15,189.

According to CNBC, college enrollment peaked in 2011, and has been decreasing ever since. This is no doubt in part to a family’s ability to pay the tuition, room and board and other related expenses. For example, in order to pay for a year of college at Harvard today would take the median household income nearly one year of paychecks. Back in 1971, it would have taken about 13 weeks of paychecks per the household median income.

Today the student debt is over $1.26 trillion dollars with over 44 million Americans in debt from student loans. 2016’s graduates on average are over $36,000 dollars in debt, which is up 6% from just one year ago.

What can be done to alleviate this situation? Why do banks get bailed out (2008 Lehman crisis) for cheating the world, while students must continue to pay a debt? Why is a private institution (The Federal Reserve) in charge of this nation’s money and finances? How will students continue to be able to go to college when the price continues to skyrocket as the federal minimum wage stays stuck at $7.25 an hour? At some point soon, the masses won’t take it anymore from the banking cartel. The education system is in for some major changes very soon.

Hiding Behind the Curtain – Best of Both Worlds

behind-curtain-hiding

QUESTION: Marty; I was watching Fox News and on the same show they had Steve Forbes and Steven Moore. I remembered you were friends with Steve Moore when he was at the Cato Institute. There was talk the two of you were going to do something together. Both are in with Trump along with Nigel Farage. My Question is, obviously you also know all the people advising Trump. Are you going to be an adviser as well?

HG

skeletons_in-closetANSWER: Yes, I know Steve Moore. Yes, we used to communicate regularly. No, I will not be an adviser to Trump. I would be glad to answer questions behind the curtain and offer access to our computer system forecast if they are serious. But I would never take a position in front of the curtain. I have advised far too many governments around the world and major multinational companies. They would turn that into some sort of treason in a Senate confirmation hearing or say that I advised Japanese and German auto manufacturers and turn that into treason.

Just not interested. Behind the curtain works better. I do what I do because trying to move even a pebble inside government takes on a huge effort. It is far easier to move mountains from the outside than from the inside.

KOMMONSENTSJANE – SOBERING STATISTICS – EDUCATIONAL MONEY BEING TOTALLY WASTED

This from an Oregon Resident…Sobering

This is so sobering and a classic example of just how our hard earned money being used to hopefully educate our children is being totally wasted. Our High schools have failed to teach our children civics and history and when they reach college they are being influenced by equally uneducated minds, products of the 60’s & 70’s who have never really experienced any true hardships and have the mind-set that the government or society “owes” them just because they exist. This MUST change or this country is in DEEP TROUBLE!

*************************

The following was received from an Oregon Resident who has concerns for our country.

While I was getting a coffee, I overheard 7 young people (22-26 years
old, 5 males, 2 female) who have been protesting in downtown Portland
the last two nights.

I told them I was doing research and…

The Real Story at New Hampshire College

hampshire-college

Chicago is where they dragged a man out of his car and beat him because he voted for Trump. Well, what’s going on in New Hampshire certainly also gives us some pause. According to reliable sources there are some really serious issues brewing at this college. A group of Hampshire students took down the American flag on campus the day after the election and burned it. To cover-up that act, the college allegedly raised a new flag at half-mast to reflect their dissatisfaction with the election. The college said this was in response to the escalating number of news reports from across the country over recent months and years of hate speech, harassment, and violence against people of color, immigrants, international citizens, and Muslims. The college then said they lowered the flag in respect of veterans, who have since protested that cover-up. One former student who supported Trump was banned from the school’s alumni board. The school then tried to claim he was not on their list of alumni. When others chimed in and said he was, they restored his access to the blog. However, current students showed real hate speech by calling him a Nazi. He was then blocked again and thrown off the blog.

The college allowed the flag to remain at half-staff to honor the students’ expression and to facilitate a campus dialogue. They should be stripped of ALL federal aid. The college did nothing to support unity and allowed the pro-Hillary activists to bully and dominate the agenda by threatening anyone who disagreed. They hurled hate-speech in protest of what they claimed was hate-speech. The definition of hate-speech seems to be anything they disagree with.

“Sometime overnight the campus flag was burned. The College does not know who burned the flag, whether it was burned by one or more students or others. The incident is still under investigation by campus police,” the college admitted.

The college was forced to claim the flag burning is under investigation. Meanwhile, the current students are clearly predominantly socialists who claim to despise Trump so they engage in hate-speech and bully any student who disagrees with their agenda. Parents are paying over $60,000 a year to brainwash their kids into intolerant Socialists.

Hillary-Students

The students who burned the flag in support of Hillary are obviously wasting the national resources since they are too stupid to research who made their student loans non-dischargeable in bankruptcy — Oops! The Clintons!

Clearly, the students who protested and burned the flag are probably on financial aid and a large portion of the college is funded by the federal grants system that they protested against. Since the college and the current student class refuse to respect our country, they should be disqualified for financial aid as of the spring term 2017. Let the students who do want to really learn go to another college that is less political. If I had kids there, they would be out.

This, unfortunately, is setting the stage for the breakup of the United States going into 2036. This divide between left and right is becoming huge — bigger than the Grand Canyo
