Citizenship Question on Census: Constitutional Problem or Threat to Democrat Politicians?

Bill Whittle can’t understand the Constitutional problem with asking a citizenship question on the decennial census, since the entire purpose of the census is to determine Congressional apportionment, and only citizens can vote…so far. Progressives and Democrats say that legal immigrants will avoid answering the census if it might jeopardize the ability of their illegal friends and family to stay in the United States. UPDATE: Shortly after we recorded this episode the Justice Department announced that efforts are still underway to add a citizenship question to the census, although printing of forms has allegedly already begun. Happy 4th of July – Which was Supposed to be July 2nd


There are only a handful of people throughout history who I admire and wish I could have shaken their hand. Thomas Jefferson was one of them. The Fourth of July is all about the signing of the Declaration of Independence which Jefferson authored.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. 

The actual Independence Day was expected to be July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution declaring the United States independent from Great Britain’s rule. After voting for independence, Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration which took two days to complete on July 4th. Jefferson had been writing it, draft after draft. He was one of the Committee of Five the Continental Congress set up to draft a declaration, with the other four being Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. John Adams had written to his wife, Abigail, stating that July 2nd would be the day of Independence.

It wasn’t until July 8 when the city of Philadelphia actually held a parade firing off guns to mark the moment. Then it wasn’t until July 9th when the Continental Army, under General George Washington, received the news. Washington then ordered soldiers who were in New York City to defend it from the British. Washington read a letter dated July 6th that he received from John Hancock, who was the president of the Continental Congress. As far as the British were concerned, they did not learn of the Declaration of Independence until August.

Thomas Jefferson wrote his own epitaph. He was proud to have done the Declaration of Independence. He made no mention of being the President of the United States.

In truth, nobody signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. John Trumbull’s painting of the signing hanging in the grand Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol was simply a work of imagination. The actual signing took place on August 2nd. That’s when the assistant to the secretary of Congress, Timothy Matlack, produced a clean copy. John Hancock signed first, right in the middle of the signature area. The last delegate to sign, according to the National Archives, is believed to be Thomas McKean of Delaware, who signed sometime in 1777.

According to the National Archives, there are 26 copies of what is known as “the Dunlap broadside” (21 owned by American institutions, two by British institutions, and three by individuals). These were printed on paper on the night of July 4th by printer John Dunlap from a document sent by the Continental Congress. The original was written on parchment. There is one line of text along the bottom edge on the back of the copies of the Declaration of Independence. It reads, “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776,” This docket (identifying label) was visible when the document was rolled up for storage.

Outrage for Profit – NIKE Pulls “Betsy Ross” Sneaker…


Is it possible to manufacture outrage as a profit strategy? Yes.  Brand imagery is part of the overall business model for any business. Begin with an ideological executive office; consider a manufacturing model dependent on a China/Asia supply chain; add a dose of political calculations into the mix; turn loose the actuaries and a unified CFO and CEO could easily find a way to turn market grievance into profit.

I’m not saying that NIKE is manipulating their market price.  However, I am saying if they were to consider their brand scale to enhance financial results, and buying back shares of their own stock to be timed with coordinatedmedia events, you could see a benefit behind the controversy.

It just strikes as too coincidental the latest NIKE “issue” happens at the beginning of a new financial quarter.  Nah, probably nothing.

(Via CNBC) Nike is pulling sneakers featuring an early American flag after former NFL football player Colin Kaepernick told the company it shouldn’t sell a shoe that he and others consider offensive, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday evening, citing people familiar with the matter.

Nike shares were falling less than 1% in premarket trading Tuesday following the news. Shares had closed Monday up nearly 2% and have rallied 15% this year, bringing the retailer’s market cap to about $134.2 billion.

Kaepernick reportedly contacted Nike officials saying he and others felt the “Betsy Ross” flag — featuring 13 stars in a circle — featured on the shoes was linked to a period of slavery. The Betsy Ross flag is one type that was flown during the American Revolution. And the shoes were set to be released in celebration of the July Fourth holiday.  (read more)

“And Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said that he will now order the state’s commerce authority to withdraw all financial incentive dollars for Nike to locate in the state because of the shoes being pulled. The move was expected to bring about 500 jobs to the area.”

Well, that makes a convenient reason for NIKE to keep manufacturing in Asia, and avoid any issues with those who might take exception.  I mean if U.S. states are opposed to the brand ideology and refuse to work with the company for U.S. jobs, well, NIKE Inc has few options right?

Having followed politics, economic and multinational corporate interests related to politics and U.S. policy, something about these NIKE moves just doesn’t pass the proverbial sniff test.

The purpose of hiring Colin Kaepernick as the multi-million face of the brand was not accidental.  The entire executive suite would be involved in the original decision and launch of the “face of Nike”.  The social justice executives made a purposeful decision to leverage political controversy as part of their brand image and business model.

Therefore wouldn’t the ever-concerned marketing department have already gone through the process of social justice evaluation for the design?  Weird.

It’s almost as if Nike would purchase hundreds of millions worth of their own shares (they did), then inject a purposeful product (they did), then wait for Q3 (they did), and time/trigger the face of their social justice brand, Kaepernick, to stand and shout (he did)… then sit back and reap financial rewards.

A bonus for Kaepernick?

Suspicious cat is suspicious.

Solving the Homeless Problem

Enjoy your blog. Can you explain the cause of homelessness in the US and what should be the cure?

ANSWER: Many of the homeless are not exactly social. Every time I drove into Philadelphia, I always saw the same man on the street with a sign saying he was homeless. He seemed to have all day to stand there with traffic, so the real question is why would he prefer to do that than just get a minimum wage job? When I was growing up in my home town in the 60’s, there was a woman who pushed her shopping cart around and slept outside. Everyone got really upset when they found out her son was a doctor in the next town. He replied that he tried everything but she would not come inside. She died, and when they took all the boxes in her cart away they found over $200,000 in cash. Obviously, she seemed to be homeless as a matter of choice.

I would not pretend to be able to reduce the entire issue to a single simple solution. There are clearly mentally ill people among them, others down on their luck, and then there are the frauds. I have offered to buy food for some who claimed to be hungry only to be rebuked. I am not sure. I met a guy who played the violin really well. You could tell he had class and style. I gave him a $100 tip in his cup and he started to play very livelily.  I suppose you could set up shelters and outlaw people on the street. Then perhaps you might be able to sort them out. There are certainly different reasons and we cannot create a one-size-fits-all approach to that problem.
