After making 18 orbits of Earth since its launch early Saturday morning, the Crew Dragon spacecraft successfully attached to the International Space Station’s Harmony module forward port via “soft capture” at 5:51 a.m. EST while the station was traveling more than 250 miles over the Pacific Ocean, just north of New Zealand. As the spacecraft approached the space station, it demonstrated its automated control and maneuvering capabilities by arriving in place at about 492 feet (150 meters) away from the orbital laboratory then reversing course and backing away from the station to 590 feet (180 meters) before the final docking sequence from about 65 feet (20 meters) away. The Crew Dragon used the station’s new international docking adapter for the first time since astronauts installed it during a spacewalk in August 2016, following its delivery to the station in the trunk of a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on its ninth commercial resupply services mission. For the Demo-1 mission, Crew Dragon is delivering more than 400 pounds of crew supplies and equipment to the space station. A lifelike test device named Ripley also is aboard the spacecraft, outfitted with sensors to provide data about potential effects on humans traveling in Crew Dragon.

SpaceX Starship Raptor Engine breaks Russian rocketry record held for two decades SpaceX CEO Elon Musk says the company’s Raptor engine, meant to power Starship and Super Heavy, has surpassed a rocketry record held by Russian scientists and engineers for more than two decades. Known as combustion chamber pressure, Raptor has reportedly surpassed a modern Russian engine known as the RD-180, reaching forces equivalent to one Tesla Model 3 balanced on every square inch of Raptor’s combustion chamber, the hardware directly adjacent to a rocket engine’s bell-shaped nozzle. Keeping that in mind, in this video, Engineering Today will discuss about combustion chamber pressure of SpaceX Raptor engine as well as Russian, R D-1 80. Why Elon Musk think, Raptor can truly outperform the R D-1 80 in near future? Let’s get into details.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 Grounding – Has Technology Gone too Far?

Boeing 737 Max 8

Is automated safety going too far? Apparently, there was a screw-like device found in the wreckage in Ethiopia that has provided investigators with an early clue into what happened. This jackscrew was used to set the trim that raises and lowers the plane’s nose. It indicates the jet was configured to dive. This evidence persuaded U.S. regulators to ground the model. There are a lot of added features that pilots were not fully aware of.

Even in our cars, there are features they do not tell you about. I have a Porsche. I pulled into my driveway and shut off the car but the stick was not completely in the park position. When I came out the next day, the battery was dead. My neighbor found the same thing happens when he travels. He has to keep his car plugged in because even when these newer cars are turned off, they are not completely off. It is still running programs and reporting back to a central computer. This is like Windows, which constantly wants to update so it can extract all your searching. Why does a car need to always be in touch with the manufacturer to the point that you cannot go on a trip and come back a couple of weeks later without discovering your battery is dead? Do we have to pop the hood and disconnect the battery before we take a trip?

Technology has advanced, but it is now being abused.

Climate Change: Real – Fake – Exaggerated?

QUESTION: I find it interesting that you are against human-induced global warming yet you confirm that climate change is natural. You seem to be in the middle of these arguments. You warned that solar activity was declining and there was a risk of going into a mini ice-age, but you did not seem to place high odds on that one. So can you elaborate on this since you seem to be the voice of reason?

GR

ANSWER: Sunspot activity has declined on schedule. February was an incredible month void of sunspots. This is clearly contributing to the extremely cold weather we are having. Cyclically, between 1645 and 1715, there was a prolonged collapse in sunspot activity known as the Maunder Minimum. Indeed, that was a period where sunspots all but disappeared. This coincided with the “Little Ice Age,” which was a period from 1500 to 1850 in the northern hemisphere. It was so cold, Viking settlers even abandoned Greenland.

I have stated many times that a major error in analysis is the attempt to reduce a problem to a single cause and effect. This topic of climate change is no different. Many scientists have strongly suggested that the Maunder Minimum caused the Little Ice Age. As I have shown, correlating everything that took place revealed that during solar minimum there is also an increase in volcanic activity and earthquakes.

You will read that scientists seem to be debating between the two rather than comprehending that EVERYTHING is absolutely connected. We cannot reduce everything to a single cause and effect. Therefore, in order for me to confirm that we are heading into a new ice age requires more volcanic activity in addition to a prolonged solar minimum.

The sunspot cycle is also called the Schwabe cycle, and currently we are moving toward the end of cycle 24. It does appear using long-term cycle analysis that cycle 25 will probably be at the very least a quieter cycle than we are concluding here with cycle 24. There’s been this steady decline, so we are indeed heading into what could be a prolonged solar minimum.

There have been several protracted solar minimums since 1000 AD:

  1. Oort minimum (1040–1080 AD)
  2. Medieval Minor minimum (1150–1200 AD)
  3. Wolf minimum (1270–1350 AD)
  4. Spörer minimum (1430–1520 AD)
  5. Maunder minimum (1620–1710 AD)
  6.  Dalton minimum (1787–1843)

This post-Dalton minimum peaked strangely with the Economic Confidence Model on 1989.95. The peaks in solar activity have been declining with each wave subsequent to that turning point. It is now declining faster than ever previously know for nearly the last 10,000 years. Pretend scientists claim climate change it due to human activity. They were predisposed to arrive at that conclusion and not offer legitimate analysis whatsoever. Society expands during warming cycles and contracts during periods of global cooling.

I have also warned that if next year is colder than the 2018/2019 winter, and if this summer ends up with an expansion of drought, then besides keeping an extra supply of canned goods, the short-term cycle would warn of a further cold period into 2024/2025. The problem here is that if governments can blame humans, then they can tax us. When something is natural, there is no one to tax or blame except Acts of God. So YES, there is always climate change, but humans do not create it. There is far more complexity to this than a single cause and effect. REAL analysis cannot take place when the objective is always to reduce it to a single cause and effect.

The Science of Sex With Sally Le Page

Sally Le Page traverses the weird and wonderful world of evolution and reproduction, with regular musical interludes along the way. This talk includes references to sex and has some mild language.

Are all males cheats? What do women want? And why should they do all the choosing anyway? What’s the largest number of children born to any woman? Join Sally Le Page on a light-hearted romp through the bizarre jungle of animal (and human) sex lives. She leads the audience through the evolutionary adventure of sex, from sexual conflict and the male frogs that sometimes hug a little too hard, to the supportive bush cricket spouses that feed and care for their mates. Sally explores mind controlling sperm, penguin prostitution, and how jealousy can affect sperm production.

The sex of an individual can have profound effects on how an organisms behaves, how it looks, how it lives and, in some cases, even how it dies. These differences are the product of different evolutionary forces acting on males and females, sometimes creating substantial conflicts between the sexes. In this talk, Judith Mank gives a quick tour of how sex is genetically programmed and how sex differences evolve. Judith Mank is Professor in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London. President Trump Issues Emergency Order Grounding Boeing 737 Max 8,9, Aircraft…

Following two similar plane crashes in Indonesia (Oct ’18) and Ethiopia (March ’19) President Trump has issued an emergency order grounding a specific Boeing 737 airliner.  The “Max 8” and “Max 9” models are being grounded out of an abundance of caution while U.S. and international authorities await the findings from crash investigation.

.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is issuing an emergency order Wednesday grounding all Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft “effective immediately,” in the wake of the crash of an Ethiopian Airliner that killed 157 people, President Donald Trump said.

“All of those planes are grounded, effective immediately,” Trump said during a scheduled briefing on border security.

Trump said any airplane currently in the air will go to its destination and then be grounded. He added all airlines and affected pilots had been notified.

Trump said the safety of the American people is of “paramount concern,” and added that the FAA would soon put out a statement on the action.

Trump said the decision to ground the aircraft “didn’t have to be made, but we thought it was the right decision.”

The president insisted the announcement was coordinated with aviation officials in Canada, U.S. carriers and aircraft manufacturer Boeing.

“Boeing is an incredible company,” Trump said. “They are working very, very hard right now and hopefully they’ll quickly come up with an answer.” (AP Report Link)

Prior to this decision, it appeared that Boeing was concerned about a specific element to flight software – SEE HERE:

BOEING – March 11, 2018 […] For the past several months and in the aftermath of Lion Air Flight 610, Boeing has been developing a flight control software enhancement for the 737 MAX, designed to make an already safe aircraft even safer. This includes updates to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) flight control law, pilot displays, operation manuals and crew training. The enhanced flight control law incorporates angle of attack (AOA) inputs, limits stabilizer trim commands in response to an erroneous angle of attack reading, and provides a limit to the stabilizer command in order to retain elevator authority.

Boeing has been working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on development, planning and certification of the software enhancement, and it will be deployed across the 737 MAX fleet in the coming weeks. The update also incorporates feedback received from our customers.

The FAA says it anticipates mandating this software enhancement with an Airworthiness Directive (AD) no later than April. We have worked with the FAA in development of this software enhancement.

[…] A pitch augmentation control law (MCAS) was implemented on the 737 MAX to improve aircraft handling characteristics and decrease pitch-up tendency at elevated angles of attack. It was put through flight testing as part of the certification process prior to the airplane entering service. MCAS does not control the airplane in normal flight; it improves the behavior of the airplane in a non-normal part of the operating envelope. (read more)
