Currency Shows Turkey’s Death Spiral into Dictatorship

Turkey has really turned into a dictatorship and the claimed “elected” head of state acts like anyone other than a democratically elected representative. He has acted more like Stalin, and has been gathering anyone who disagrees and demanding other government return people who have fled from him so he can execute them. The Turkish author Aslı Erdoğan was jailed in August and accused of links to terrorists as well as being a member of the terrorist organization the government labelled PKK. Last week began the trial against this journalist in Istanbul and outside are demonstrators gathered to protest.

She has been detained for over 130 days. She and several other writers and journalists are accused of links to terrorists after writing in the now closed down pro-Kurdish newspaper Özgür Gündem. The arrests in August led to large international protests in autumn. This is showing how if you disagree with government, that is itself a crime.

The Turkish currency is showing that it will continue to decline into 2019/2020. The more authoritarian the government becomes, the higher the dollar will rise against the currency. Moving into this type of sharp decline against the dollar reflects the collapse in worldwide confidence in the regime.

nerosesjanusThe Roman god Janus was the god of the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. In ancient Rome, the Temple of Janus stood in the Roman Forum with doors on both ends, and inside was a statue of Janus, who is always represented as the two-faced god. The doors of his temple were open in time of war and closed to mark peace. This represented that things could change politically during war.

Janus (Ianuarius) was depicted as having two faces, because he looks to the future and to the past simultaneously. British historian Howard Hayes Scullard (1903-1983) argued that the Roman farmers’ almanacs named January after the god Juno. I disagree with that because he refers to the Republic period prior to Caesar’s revisions. The month of June is named after Juno and January is named after Janus.

Janus presided over the beginnings, gates, transitions, time, and endings but was primarily seen as the god who began and ended conflicts, and thus war and peace. So when we celebrate New Year’s Eve, and we say goodbye to the past and hello to the future, which is a concept stemming from Janus.

This year is indeed a beginning. Should the doors be open for civil unrest?

Could AI Become Predictable?

QUESTION: Marty,

It occurs to me that some of the most persuasive individuals of history (good or bad) have been so effective because they possessed a keen understanding of Human Nature allowing them to predict the response of their audience, and in turn, coerce them toward a desired action.  The question I would like your thoughts on is this: Do artificially intelligent systems have a “nature” in common making their responses predictable, and therefore exploitable? Thanks for all that you do, there are few opinions I value as highly as yours.

ANSWER: First, you have a lot of charlatans who claim to be using AI (Artificial Intelligence) that is really just a program following a predetermined script. That is not the real thing by any shape of the imagination. Real AI takes an awful lot of money, time, and resources no matter what fancy name they give their program. That type of “expert system” masquerading as AI is very predictable and can be easily reversed engineered.

If we are talking about the real thing, the answer is no possible way. I wrote the code for our system. It took me decades. To accomplish something that can accurately forecast BREXIT, Trump, Italy, and Hollande stepping down in France, would be absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to code or reverse engineer. Oh, I could feed in the US election data and come up with an isolated cyclical forecast. But how do you do BREXIT with no past track record of such referendums or that of Italy? These types of forecasts are extrapolations based completely upon all trends globally. There is no single line of code that would read IF-THIS-THEN that ELSE this over here. It is weighing so many variables it is really impossible to reverse engineer that.

The result of a real AI system, or better described as machine learning, is really giving the computer the capacity to learn and in doing so we create a real thinking process, minus the emotion. How it will arrive at a decision on say BREXIT is different from Trump winning. Each process is a different branch. Very interesting from a programming viewpoint.
