The Bank of Canada Should Admit QE FAILED

Armstrong Economics Blog/Canada Re-Posted Oct 11, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

In 2020, Pierre Poilievre, chief Conservative spokesman on finance issues, said Canada’s central bank “should not be an ATM for Trudeau’s insatiable spending appetites.” Conservatives cooperated with the Liberals when it came to COVID-19 emergency spending. Everyone was in on that power grab. Now the nation is in worse shape, further in debt, and inflation is soaring.

Yet, Trudeau continues to spend recklessly without hesitation. The Bank of Canada (BoC) should remain neutral on political issues. Similar to the Federal Reserve, the BoC is the largest buyer of domestic debt. In response to criticism, the bank launched a social media campaign to deflect blame. “#YouAskedUs if we printed cash to finance the federal gov’t. We didn’t,” the Bank of Canada tweeted on August 25. Due to the pandemic, the central bank “took various measures, like buying bonds, to support and ensure a strong and stable #economy,” the bank tweeted. “We bought existing gov’t bonds from banks on the open market. Why? This helped unblock frozen markets at the start of the #pandemic. It let households, companies and governments access funding when they really needed it.”

This is the problem with those who believe they can manipulate the economy. Governments completely shut down the world for over a year and then claimed that they needed to spend as much as possible to save us from the crisis they created. “We did not use cash to pay for the bonds. We bought the bonds with settlement balances — a kind of central bank reserve — not with bank notes,” the bank continued to Tweet back in August. Basically, the strategy all along was Quantitative Easing. It failed.

They artificially lowered rates for too long and purchased government debt with no method for repayment. Their stupid idea of Quantitative Easing and lowering rates were under their theory that people would borrow if it were cheap enough. The central banks fail to understand that people will absolutely not borrow at any rate if there is no confidence. It has become conventional wisdom that when all else fails to make economies grow, create new money and buy government bonds. Of course, the “all else” never includes deregulation and lowering taxes.

Now Governor Tiff Macklem is posting videos on Twitter to explain why the bank raised rates by 300 bps in the past six months. Yes, “inflation is too high,” as Macklem pointed out, but he’s acting a bit too late. “It is by raising interest rates that we’re going to slow spending in the economy, give the economy time to catch up and take the steam out of inflation,” Macklem said in the video. “That’s gonna [sic] get inflation back down.” WHAT ABOUT GOVERNMENT SPENDING? Monetary policy does not align with the bank’s goals, as Trudeau’s continued spending will prolong inflation.

Holiday Expenses Rise in Canada

Armstrong Economics Blog/Canada Re-Posted Oct 10, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

Wishing our friends in the north a happy Thanksgiving.

Canada’s Thanksgiving is not as widely celebrated as America’s November feast. However, outside Quebec, around 90% of Canadians plan to celebrate the holiday. Everything from fuel to food is more expensive this year. Statistics Canada reported a 10.8% rise in food prices this August, marking the fastest pace of food inflation since 1981.

The Agri-food Analytics Lab (AAL) and Angus Reid conducted a survey (sample size 1,244) to see how Canadians plan to celebrate the holiday this year. Turkey prices have risen 16% per kilogram this year. In British Columbia, 29% of respondents said that they would be making changes to the meals they typically prepare due to food prices, while 25% in Alberta and 20% in Manitoba said the same. Around 19% of those celebrating in Ontario will be changing the menu due to costs, followed by 17% in the Atlantic, 10% in Quebec, and 8% in Saskatchewan.

In addition to turkey prices increasing, potatoes have spiked by 22% this year. Bread and dairy prices have gone up 13%, while cranberries have increased by 12%. Prices vary based on location, but they’re up in every province. So many are grateful for the harvest, albeit less bountiful.

Canadians Not Willing to Hand Over Guns

Armstrong Economics Blog/Canada Re-Posted Oct 4, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

The Trudeau Administration wants to eliminate all freedoms. Provinces are fighting back at Trudeau’s gun confiscation, deemed a “mandatory gun buyback” for assault rifles. As usual, the government put this plan in place without a plan for enforcement.

Two years ago, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, in the video above, explained that firearm ownership is already under strict regulations. Only law-abiding citizens must adhere to these regulations. He accused Ottawa of using the people as scapegoats for their gun confiscation plan instead of cracking down on gangs and criminals who actually commit gun crimes. Now, Trudeau is going after the people and pointing at events that occurred outside Canada as a reason to ban citizens from legally owning assault rifles.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Alberta Justice Minister and Solicitor General Tyler Shandro reminded the Liberal Party that Alberta taxpayers pay C$750 million annually to fund the RCMP. “We expect that those dollars not be wasted to pay for a confiscation program that will not increase public safety,” Shandro said after calling the program disturbing. “We will not tolerate taking officers off the street in order to confiscate the property of law-abiding firearms owners.”

Manitoba Attorney General Kelvin Goertzen quoted from a letter that he wrote to Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, said the law “unnecessarily targets lawful gun owners,” as criminals are still going to be in possession of firearms – obviously. “In Manitoba’s view, any buy-back program cannot further erode precious provincial police resources, already suffering from large vacancy rates, from focusing on investigation of violent crime.”

Saskatchewan’s Minister of Corrections, Policing, and Public Safety Christine Tell also called the mandate a waste of resources that is not supported. “The Government of Saskatchewan does not support and will not [authorize] the use of provincially funded resources for any process that is connected to the federal government’s proposed ‘buyback’ of these firearms,” she declared.

Banning any form of firearms is a method to control the people. The government and criminals will be the only ones with power, with the average law-abiding citizen helpless. Gun confiscation has occurred countless times in RECENT history and has not ended well.

Canada to End Vaccine Mandates

Armstrong Economics Blog/Canada Re-Posted Sep 28, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

Canada is finally ending the absurd COVID vaccine mandates. No, Trudeau did not come to his senses. The truth of the matter is that the majority of people dying from COVID are the triple and quadruple vaccinated. In fact, they account for 90% of COVID-related deaths in the past three months.

There is true mass psychosis surrounding the vaccination. It does not prevent transmission or infection. Despite that being a known fact, politicians are eager to promote the vaccine, along with the media that continues to push boosters on every platform available. People are bringing their babies and elderly loved ones to get the latest vaccine with lines out the door. What happens now when the mask falls and people realize the truth? There are people crying online that it is “too soon” to remove the vaccine requirement. It is cognitive dissonance. They cannot allow their brains to process that they were lied to for years. The vaccine only weakened people’s immune systems and made them more susceptible to COVID.

IT WAS NEVER SAFE AND EFFECTIVE.

I congratulate the Canadian Truck Convoy and all others who risked their liberty and lives to protest this false narrative. The silent majority has won, but at what cost? Countless lives were destroyed over this mandate. People lost their livelihoods and homes. Some who I personally know were forced to flee Canada as they were not willing to risk their health. Businesses were ruined. Families were separated as the demonized unvaccinated could not even enter Canada. Lives were completely uprooted due to this vaccine mandate imposed by the Trudeau Administration.

And now they want to pretend everything is ok and sweep it all under the rug. No. We should remember what Trudeau and the globalists did to the people. The unvaccinated were gas lighted and banished from society for years. The people were threatened in every way possible until they agreed to submit to the government’s order. We now see how much control the government has over the people. Public confidence will never be the same.

Canada Scheduled to End Vaccination Border Requirements October 1st

New Zealand, Australia and Canada retained the most restrictive policies on vaccination the longest. However, today Canada announced they are finally loosening the totalitarian fiats and permitting travelers to enter the country without proof of vaccination.

New measures begin October 1st.

(The Hill) — Canada is lifting its testing, quarantine and vaccination requirements at the border, a step in rolling back pandemic restrictions designed to stave off the spread of COVID-19, the government announced Monday.

Starting Oct. 1, international travelers will be able to enter Canada without providing proof of vaccination, taking a pre-arrival test or undergoing quarantine, according to a government release. Compulsory masking on domestic planes and trains will also end, as will a longstanding requirement to share health information with the Canadian government via its ArriveCAN application prior to entry.

The move comes as many countries attempt to ease out of the strict restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic even as the virus continues to circulate. (read more)

Canada Seeking Covid Patient Guards

Paladin Security recently posted a job for a position that did not previously exist. The company is seeking “patient watch attendants” to guard COVID patients. Are they looking to set up COVID camps as Australia did? They are looking for positions around-the-clock to monitor COVID patients constantly. It would seem odd if they hired security guards to watch patients suffering from any other ailment. This C$20 per hour position is an entry-level security position and requires no medical training.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Constantly monitor the assigned patient in accordance with the hospital.
  • Accurately maintain the patient activity log and other forms as directed while conducting direct patient monitoring.
  • Maintain diligence and continuous assessment of the environment for hazards in order to help ensure that a safe environment is maintained.
  • Utilize critical thinking in maintaining personal space with the patient while remaining at an appropriate distance from patient(s) to intervene if there are any changes in the patient or the environment.
  • Advise nursing staff of changes in behavior, unusual circumstances, or reasonable patient needs.
  • Exercise verbal skills to de-escalate potentially hostile patients or visitors.

Imagine if we hired security guards to “de-escalate potentially hostile patients or visitors” for literally ANY other sickness. Would you want someone spying on you while sick and reporting your movements back to the medical staff? These individuals have absolutely zero medical training but will be handling patient logs and “conducting direct patient monitoring.” Why is security required for sick patients at all? Specifically, COVID patients. We should question why the sick need to be guarded like prisoners.

This is a form of control. Joe Biden may have strayed from the script and declared that the “pandemic is over,” but Trudeau is one of Schwab’s favorite Young Leaders who will continue this madness for as long as the voters allow.

One-Third of Canadians Worried About Daily Expenses

Armstrong Economics Blog/Canada Re-Posted Sep 21, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

Inflation is hurting everyone. The Financial Wellbeing Index for Summer 2022 by Lifeworks found that 29% of 3,000 respondents said they are concerned they can no longer afford daily life expenses. The measure for overall financial well-being fell to 64%, which is the lowest number recorded since the survey began in the winter of 2021.

Those under 40, who have had less time in the workforce to save, are significantly more troubled and are 75% more likely to report worry over basic life expenses. Parents are 40% more likely to be concerned about covering expenses. Perhaps this is why the government is slowly grabbing workers in a socialistic plot – don’t worry, the government will take care of you!

Half of those who expressed concern said that food prices had made the most notable dent in their wallets, while 35% cited gas costs. Nearly a quarter said they are worried about making good on their mortgage payments.

Inflation in Canada reached 7.6% in July, with core inflation up 6.6%. Inflation fell by 0.6% in August on the monthly level but is still up 7% annually. Government is engulfing the private sectorand long-term growth is not a priority for the Trudeau Administration.

Trudeau Throws C$100 Million at Woke Agenda

Armstrong Economics Blog/Canada Re-Posted Sep 1, 2022 by Martin Armstrong

As Canadians grapple with inflation, most taxpayers are eager to spend money on 2SLGBT programs and awareness. Well, at least that is what the Trudeau Administration falsely believes. The government has budgeted C$100 million for 2SLGBT initiatives. Sadly, they have the power to spend this money recklessly without the taxpayers’ consent.

I had to look up 2S since the acronym continues to grow by the day. The first search result in Google is from a website intended for Canadian children to understand the infinite amount of genders:

“Two-Spirit (or 2 Spirit or 2S): an important term within some Indigenous cultures and for some Indigenous people, meaning a person with both a feminine and a masculine spirit living in the same body. This is often used to describe sexual orientation, gender identity and/or spiritual identity.”

It is a shame that this is what children are learning in classrooms. So where in the WTF is this money going? Apparently, 75% will go toward diversity and inclusion, “where the real work of support comes from,” Trudeau said. That is a very broad way to say they plan to use the money however they see fit. Around C$5 million will go toward a public awareness campaign, and an additional will C$7.7 will be spent on data collection and research.

People can live life however they see fit. I do not care what you do behind closed doors. However, the taxpayer should not need to foot the bill for this alternative lifestyle. This plan will only cause people to feel a divide between traditional vs alternative lifestyles. Even many with alternative lifestyles see that this woke agenda has gone too far. “This will guide our ongoing work to fight discrimination, break down barriers, to advance rights, and to build a future where everyone in Canada is truly free to be who they are and love whom they love,” Trudeau said. Love thy neighbor for free and not at the cost of C$100 million.
