Collectibles Going Crazy?

Armstrong Economics Blog/Collectibles Re-Posted Apr 1, 2021 by Martin Armstrong

This June, Sotheby’s will be auctioning off three of the greatest rarities in the stamp and coin field. The 1933 Double Eagle $20 gold coin, the unique British Guiana One-Cent Black on Magenta, and the unique Inverted Jenny 1918 Plate Block. This is truly an incredible offering from a single collector to have captured three of the rarest and most unique collectibles in history.

It is a bit unusual that a unique stamp from a less than the mainstream region has emerged as the rarest and sole-surviving example of the British Guiana One-Cent Magenta from 1856. It was last sold in 2014 at Sotheby’s for $9.48 million. While it was rediscovered by a 12-year-old schoolboy living in South America in 1873, perhaps due to fantastic marketing, it has emerged as one of the most important stamps in famous collections that have ever assembled. In 1873 L. Vernon Vaughan, a 12-year-old schoolboy living with his family in British Guiana found the stamp among a group of family papers bearing many British Guiana issues. The young philatelist would later sell the stamp for several shillings to another local collector. The British Guiana then entered the UK in 1878, and shortly after, it was purchased in Paris by Count Philippe la Renotière von Ferrary who many considered to be perhaps the greatest stamp collector in history. Then following the war, France seized Ferrary’s collection, which had been donated to the Postmuseum in Berlin, as part of war reparations due from Germany following World War I. The stamp was then sold in 1922 at auction when it was purchased by Arthur Hind, a textile magnate from New York, for its first auction-record price of $35,000. The stamp changed hands moving from the collections of the Australian engineer Frederick T. Small; then a consortium headed by Irwin Weinberg; then by John du Pont of the famous chemical company. Du Pont paid $935,000 for the stamp in a 1980 auction, before it was last sold at auction to Weitzman for the record-setting price of $9.48 million.

Interestingly, a tradition emerged where previous owners of the British Guiana signed the back of the stamp. Weitzman added his own personal mark to the reverse of the stamp inscribing his initials “SW” along with a line drawing of a stiletto shoe as a nod to his legacy in fashion.

This 1933 Double Eagle ($20 gold coin) is the only example that may be legally owned by an individual. It was the coin acquired by King Farouk of Egypt. Stuart Weitzman purchased the coin at a Sotheby’s/Stack’s auction in 2002 for a world record price of US$7.59 million, nearly doubling the previous record. The Director of the United States Mint signed a Certificate of Monetization that, in return for twenty dollars, authorized the issuance of this single example.

In August 2005, the US Mint announced the recovery of ten additional stolen 1933 double eagle gold coins from the family of Philadelphia jeweler/coin dealer Israel Switt, who was the illicit coin dealer identified by the Secret Service as a party to the theft who admitted selling the first nine double eagles that were recovered. Israel Switt had many contacts and friends within the Philadelphia Mint. As the story goes, the Secret Service found that only one man, George McCann, had access to the coins at the time and served prison time for similar embezzlement in 1940. Israel Switt somehow obtained the stolen 1933 double eagles. One theory is that McCann swapped the previous year’s Double Eagles for the 1933 specimens prior to melting, thereby making sure the count was correct. The US mint began striking Double Eagles on March 15, 1933. Roosevelt’s executive order to ban gold was not finalized until April 5. Therefore, on March 6, 1933, the Secretary of the Treasury ordered the Director of the Mint to pay gold only under a license issued by the Secretary, and the United States Mint cashier’s daily statements do not reflect that any 1933 Double Eagles were paid out.

In September 2004, the claimed owner, Joan Switt Langbord, heir to Israel Swift, tried to sell the 10 coins and they had to be surrendered to the Secret Service. In July 2005, the coins were authenticated by the United States Mint after working with the Smithsonian Institution, as being genuine 1933 double eagles. Joan Switt Langbord claimed to have found them in a box and she went to court to have them returned. On October 28, 2010, US court ruled and the issue went to trial in July 2011. On July 20, 2011, after a ten-day trial, a jury ruled unanimously in favor of the United States government and Lanford appealed. At first, the Court of Appeals overruled the jury, but then it went En Banc and the Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the government. The Langbords appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which on April 17th, 2017 denied certiorari.

Hetty Green’s son, Edward Howland Robinson Green (1868-1936), was not so frugal and spent $3  million on coins and stamps. He was an avid collector and bought the famous sheet of 100 inverted airmail stamps in 1918, paying $20,000. The last time this Plate Block appeared on the market was 16 years ago when it sold at auction for $2.97 million.

Meanwhile, the classic Ferraris from the 1980s have nearly doubled in price over the past year.

Pence “Laying Groundwork” For a 2024 Presidential Bid?

Not an April fool’s joke, but it might as well be.

Two media reports [Here and Here] about former VP Mike Pence considering a potential run for President in 2024 present the most laughable political hypothetical in recent memory.   Particularly, and specifically, because even President Trump would likely not include Pence in a short list of people for endorsement.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump recently rattled off the names of those he viewed as future leaders of the Republican Party, including Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz along with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Conspicuously absent from the list: Mike Pence.

The former vice president is steadily reentering public life as he eyes a potential run for the White House in 2024.” (read more)

Newsmax has a similar story outlining steps Mike Pence appears to be making to lean forward to the 2024 GOP primary.  However, as pointed out by both articles, President Trump has not included his former VP in any positive affirmation about the future of the republican party.

NewsMax – […] “Since leaving office in January, Pence, who was Indiana’s governor and a member of Congress before being tapped as Trump’s running mate, has kept a lower profile. He’s pieced together a portfolio aimed at maintaining influence, paying the bills, and laying the groundwork for an expected presidential run.

He’s forged a partnerships with the conservative Heritage Foundation and has even been discussed as a potential president of the organization, according to two people familiar with the discussions. He’s joined the Young America’s Foundation and a top speakers’ bureau, penned an op-ed for the Daily Signal about the 2020 election, and recently toured a Christian relief organization in North Carolina. He will make his first public speech since leaving office next month at the Palmetto Family Council’s annual fundraiser in South Carolina, another crucial primary state.

Pence also has discussed writing a book, according to aides, has been in continued conversation with his evangelical allies, and plans to spend much of the next two years helping Republican candidates as they try to reclaim House and Senate majorities in 2022. (read more)

Supreme Court Continues to Protect Politicians

Armstrong Economics Blog/Rule of Law Re-Posted Mar 29, 2021 by Martin Armstrong

Supreme Court protects Hillary Clinton as expected. The Supreme Court refused to compel Hillary Clinton to testify about her email server rejecting a move by Judicial Watch. This is further proof that the Supreme Court is refusing to enforce the law when it comes to politicians.

SNL Shows whoever is President – They are Fair Game

Armstrong Economics Blog/Politics Re-Posted Mar 29, 2021 by Martin Armstrong

The Washington Post has never, at least that I recall, critiqued an SNL skit. They just could not help themselves to rush to the defense of Biden. This proves it is no longer about news – it is just about propaganda. It is True the “Democracy Dies in Darkness” and the Washington Post is doing everything they can to kill democracy.

Senators on Armed Services Committee Promote Expansion of NSA Domestic Data Gathering and Surveillance – NSA Response: “The Fourth Amendment is a “Key Obstacle” You Need to Remove

Posted originally on the conservative tree house March 28, 2021 | Sundance | 206 Comments

OK, before I blow a blood pressure cuff on this issue, please keep in mind the warnings provided on these pages about DHS now starting to assemble lists of dissident citizens under the guise of domestic extremists. {Go Deep}  Also remind yourself the same DHS and FBI are now using private contractors embedded in Big Tech to scour public information on social media and provide feedback to help DHS assemble those lists. {Go Deep}

Now, we take that foundation and build it one step further…. This well-written report about the recent Senate Armed Services Committee discussion with the National Security Agency (NSA) needs to be absorbed with the prior information as context.  These paragraphs are alarming in the extreme (emphasis mine):

[…] “Several members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday voiced their support for expanded authorities for the NSA and U.S. Cyber Command to conduct more intelligence gathering domestically, something that the Biden administration already is exploring, according to Gen. Paul Nakasone, who leads both agencies.”

“Former NSA general counsel Glenn Gertstell has argued that an expansion of NSA authorities to collect domestic intelligence is overdue. “It can’t possibly be the case that the Fourth Amendment ties our hands in such a way that we just have to sit there and watch the Chinese romp through our infrastructure,” he told the Wall Street Journal in March. The Fourth Amendment protects against unreasonable searches and [NSA Director] Nakasone cited it as a key obstacle to potential expansion of the NSA’s powers domestically.” (read more)

The Fourth Amendment is an “obstacle“?….  WTF kind of outlook is that.

Despite their efforts, their ongoing efforts, to destroy what remaining privacy safeguards are in place…. I do not want to live in a nation that loses the fundamental protection of the Fourth Amendment:  “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” (citation)

Sunday Talks, A Frustrated Eric Trump Discusses How JoeBama Created The Border Crisis He Now Denies

Eric Trump expresses the frustrations felt by many Americans who are watching the JoeBama administration deconstruct the border protections and policies put into place by his father, President Trump.

Additionally, Maria Bartiromo asks for Trump’s perspective on the vaccine rollout, the hypocrisy of the Hunter Biden coverup and the potential for a Joe Biden executive order to initiate more gun control.

A wise quote from a friend today makes a lot of sense in the big picture…. “[A White House] memo goes out saying all communications must read “biden/harris admin” ….. [Biden publicly claims Kamala Harris in charge of “Border Crisis, but] now Kammy isn’t the border gal … but she’s doing the diplomat stuff with south of the border governments. She gets cred for that while fully insulated from the crisis that Biden won’t have to answer for in any way except preapproved questions….have to give the WH team credit for creating a perfectly bubbled environment around jumbled Joe. It’s so perfect why change it? With Joe at the helm, the WH can claim credit and deny responsibility with zero media pushback…couldn’t do that with Harris in charge. She is universally unlikeable, and so blatantly phony that her campaign couldn’t raise money….. Harris couldn’t get away with bumbling through a press conference or hiding from the world the way Joe does. I now think the WH team wants to keep pushing Joe out there for as long as possible.”

Sunday Talks, Senator Ted Cruz Discusses GOP Border Visit and Ongoing Border Crisis

Sometimes it is difficult to bite your tongue and not respond negatively to the manipulative public positioning of well known sanctimonious hypocrites.  Today, as I watched this interview with Senator Ted Cruz, my prayers were for grace amid the face the stunning & historical hypocrisy.

You see, there’s a problem with Cruz’s current position of advocacy regarding the southern border crisis… a position he must first reconcile before any credibility can be given to any statements.  Back in 2014 Ted Cruz, Glenn Beck and Dana Loesch attacked anyone who challenged them on their ridiculous public spectacle at the U.S. southern border; during their Teddy Bears and Soccer Balls tour.  More on that in a moment….

Here is Ted Cruz discussing his ‘new found’ concern about illegal aliens under the Biden administration.

In 2014 Ted Cruz, Glenn Beck and Dana Loesch went to the Texas border to deliver gifts to the incoming illegal aliens during the first of many crisis involving “Unaccompanied Alien Children.” Yes the same Dana Loesch that went on to become the spokesperson for the NRA was at the border handing out gifts to illegal border crossers under the guise of a humanitarian crisis. {Full Details Here}

Beck and Cruz were passing out Teddy Bears and Soccer Balls, while Catholic Charities and Baptist Child and Family Services were getting millions. The inner-city American kids? Well, nothing for them…. not even a word from DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson. But, oh yeah, Black Lives Matter, right? I digress.  All of this is well documented in the links above. It’s all there for those who have eyes to see and a capability of being intellectually honest.

When Clarice Feldman, Thomas Lifson (American Thinker) and myself called-out their enabling conduct, the trio of Cruz, Beck and Loesch went bananas and launched a full-throated attack against us for calling them out. Seven years later Ted Cruz apparently wants everyone to forget what he did to create the environment that now exists as the UAC issue on steroids happens again.

Yes, we have a crisis at the southern border; however, it is a crisis that Ted Cruz has always wind-tested his response toward.

President Trump Tells Jeanine Pirro He’ll Likely Visit the Southern Border

Earlier tonight during an interview with Jeanine Pirro, President Donald Trump said he is likely to visit the Southern U.S. border as requested by border patrol agents who need the support.

“Well, a lot of people want me to. The Border Patrol and all of the people of ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], they want me to go. I really feel I sort of owe it to them, they’re great people.”
