Conversation UPDATE: William Happer

Four years ago, Stuart went to Princeton University to interview Professor William Happer. When he interviewed him, he was aware that he was a CO2 (and its impact on climate) contrarian. Mr. Happer points out carbon dioxide is an important trace gas and an integral part of the carbon cycle, a bio-geo-chemical cycle in which carbon is exchanged between the oceans, soil, rocks and the biosphere. Virtually all of life on the plant requires CO2 concentrations to be above 150 parts per million. The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere over the past 500 million years has been as high as 4,000 ppm and as low as 180 ppm. Since 1880 when CO2 was measured at Mauna Loa in Hawaii levels have risen from 280 ppm to 413 ppm as of April 2019. Happer, as you will hear, says the impact of CO2 on temperature rise has already taken effect and he points to the logarithmic scale, which is a nonlinear scale often used to analyze a large range of quantities. According to Mr. Happer, it would take another 400 ppm to affect temperature by one additional degree. Mr. Happer is also aware of the folly of predictions. And he, like Freeman Dyson, points to the inability of models to accurately predict climate outcomes. Then add in length of day, which changes by milliseconds, transferring massive amounts of energy mostly into the oceans – causing oscillations that, according to climatologist Judith Curry, are not considered in current climate models. I must ask: is the science of climate really settled? Can it ever be? Mr. Happer’s position on climate, his scientific credentials and his role in the Trump administration have made him a very large target. He is a physicist who specialized in the study of atomic physics, optics and spectroscopy. He is the Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics and he is the Davisson-Germer Prize winner in Atomic or Surface Physics. He is not nor could he be a climate scientist because that designation is so new that UCLA only just launched a degree program in 2018. Since that interview, Greenpeace outed him in a sting operation and President Donald Trump recruited Professor Happer to be a member of a Presidential Committee on Climate Security. However, in September of 2019, the unflinching Mr. Happer quit. According to Science Magazine, while Happer may have been unflinching, Trump’s White House isn’t. So on Sept 13, 2019, Mr. Happer resigned. Professor Happer, as you will see in this interview, firmly believes the impact of CO2 has been misrepresented.

GWPF Interview: New Solar Research Raises Climate Questions, Triggers Attacks

Recent research by Professor Valentina Zharkova (Northumbria University) and colleagues has shed new light on the inner workings of the Sun. If correct, this new discovery means that future solar cycles and variations in the Sun’s activity can be predicted more accurately. The research suggests that the next three solar cycles will see solar activity reduce significantly into the middle of the century, producing conditions similar to those last seen in the 1600s – during the Maunder Minimum. This may have implications for temperatures here on Earth. Future solar cycles will serve as a test of the astrophysicists’ work, but some climate scientists have not welcomed the research and even tried to supress the new findings. How the sun affects temperatures on Earth (w/ Valentina Zharkova, Northumbria University)

The sun is going through a stage known as a solar or Maunder Minimum. This is where the solar activity that ignites solar flares or sun spots has decreased. It’s a normal cycle and one that has been linked to the mini ice age that lasted more than 50 years starting in the mid-1600s. According to space weather since 2015, the number of days without a recordable sun spot has been rising year over year. NOAA, NASA and others all appear to agree the sun is entering a solar minimum phase. What it means is open to interpretation because as Professor William Happer pointed out when I asked him about the growing number of people and agencies that suggest a solar minimum could lead to a cooling off period, he directed me the Danish proverb: “It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future.” It has been suggested that mathematics can establish patterns and back them up with empirical evidence to support a prediction. We reached out to Professor of Mathematics Valentina Zharkova of Northumbria University, one of the first people to raise awareness of the decrease in solar activity, for a Conversation That Matters about the sun, its reduced activity and her reading of the impact it will have on temperatures on earth.

Coping with Climate Anxiety: The Overwhelming Mental Impact of Global Climate Change

Refuse to have children, stop traveling by jet, and carry chopsticks in your purse to avoid using disposable flatware at restaurants. These are some of the coping techniques adopted by folks suffering from climate anxiety, climate grief or climate despair. These new mental health conditions constitute an under-reported consequence of our modern carbon-intensive lifestyle — the overwhelming mental impact of global climate change. How can acute sufferers find relief? Watch this episode of Bill Whittle Now with Scott Ott.

Repo Crisis – Best Kept Secret Ever!

COMMENT: Marty; I want to thank you for a great conference. It is clear you are the only true institutional adviser. Our board is very impressed. The FT reported that there is still no  single factor that caused the dislocations in the repo market in mid-September. You are the only one who explains the event authoritative.

Thanks

JG

ANSWER: Nobody will talk publicly. Everyone is scared to death of starting a panic. This is the BEST kept secret I have ever seen in my career. The real test comes at year-end when banks typically step back from the repo market so that their balance sheets are smaller for December 31 regulatory calculations. We will see what really happens then on the chaos scale of 1 to 10. I find it really funny how there are articles calling it the new QE to where the Fed is clandestinely buying T-Bills through repo. This really seems to be an orchestrated effort at disinformation. It is hard to say if the people who make this up are deliberate agents of the government hired to keep people looking in the wrong direction.

UK Snow Hits 7-Year Temperature Low

COMMENT: I told a friend to read your blog for a global viewpoint. He said you were wrong that all of Britain was not under snow. I told him he was an idiot. Never is absolutely every part of a country under snow except perhaps Siberia.

Cheers from very cold U.K.

DK

REPLY: Yes, the temperature in England fell to a 7-year low, and in Scotland, I think it hit a 10-year low. There is a bad winter storm in the center of the USA. There is no snow in Florida. A story about the cold temperatures in no way means absolutely every spot in a country.

You know what they say about snow. The first snowfall is like seeing an old friend. It is great. But If they stay for weeks, sooner or later you want to throw them out of your house.

Gloomberg Comes to Town

BAN EVERYTHING

As Mayor of New York City, billionaire Michael Bloomberg was the quintessential statist.

Even though he ran as Republican, the ‘stop and frisker’ was more of a neocon than libertarian. He’s also very pro-abortion, pro illegal immigration, and pro-taxes. He’s known for creating a lot of rules and regulations. He wanted to ban salt at restaurants and Big Gulp sodas at fast food restaurants. He is for gun control and had banned smoking in public places. Bloomberg said government was ‘a force for good.’ Notice the word ‘force.’ Government is force, and like many tyrants, Bloomberg gets to decide what is good for us. The billionaire switched parties and became a Democrat, which is more in alignment with his views. That is, they all love a big, bloated, and meddlesome government that forces citizens to do their bidding.

His main passion doing something about ‘climate change.’ Washington Governor Jay Inslee also made that the number 1 priority in his campaign. He’s already dropped out. Americans don’t want globalism or a carbon tax.

We don’t want to be forced to buy electric cars and have cheap and clean-burning coal plants shut down. Bloomberg is trying to drum up fear—doom and gloom—in order to get action on ‘climate change.’ He wants the Green New Deal or some variation on that disaster. Most Americans know the climate changes—it’s called weather. They don’t want to lose their jobs or pay a carbon tax. They are too busy struggling to make ends meet to make it a top issue in their lives. Bloomberg doesn’t have that problem—he’s worth comfortable $58 billion dollars. He wants his planet saved! He wants his populace controlled!

Bloomberg saw Donald Trump a fellow billionaire become president against all odds. Perhaps he thought Trump won because he had a lot of campaign money at his disposal. Not so. Hillary outspent Trump 2 to 1 and still lost. Bloomberg has Trump Derangement Syndrome. Here’s one of his quotes:

“We cannot afford four more years of President Trump’s reckless and unethical actions. He represents an existential threat to our country and our values. If he wins another term in office, we may never recover from the damage.”

Bloomberg may not realize it, but Trump didn’t win because he was a billionaire. He won because he offered Americans a chance to get our Republic back. It was stolen by the Deep State and they are a very corrupt lot. They’re the swamp that Trump has promised to drain. Bloomberg is part of that swamp and that’s why he will lose.
