Cycles in Fashion

Armstrong Economics Blog/Understanding Cycles Re-Posted Jun 19, 2021 by Martin Armstrong

QUESTION: Isn’t the current version of the economy much more decadent than in ancient times? So the past is not always the same.

WG

ANSWER: I think you have not paid attention or perhaps you have never gone to a museum. The one thing that stands out is the constant changing in fashion. It’s been a long-standing joke that when women’s skirts rise, so does the stock market. When they fall to nearly the ground, the market crashes – i.e. Roaring ’20s.

There are indeed similar trends in ancient times. The term he assumed the Purple meant that the Emperor was the only one allowed to wear purple which was a very expensive die imported from India. In the Catholic Church during Advent, the priest wears purple vestments symbolizing the same Roman tradition.

However, even if you look at the coinage of the various wives of Emperors, and you will quickly notice the changing hairstyles. I suggest looking at a Fashion Museum and you will also see a cycle in clothing that corresponds to the rise and fall in temperatures. Fashion indeed becomes more elaborate in good times, and it does become standard during the bad times.

Media Very Concerned American Parents Do Not Want Children Indoctrinated

This soundbite below from Meet The Press is reflective of the perspective of U.S. media toward the growing push-back from parents surrounding Critical Race Theory in schools.

The media are concerned, very concerned, that parents are starting to wake up. If this awakening continues, this could present a problem:

Tiananmen 32 Years Ago Today

Posted originally on the conservative tree house on June 4, 2021 | Sundance | 259 Comments

It was 32 years ago tonight when the Chinese government sent the Mongolian Army into Tiananmen Square to crackdown on the mostly student protestors.

It is against the law in China to recognize today, memorialize the dead, or even speak publicly of this bloody anniversary. Few people know the short and long-term political ramifications to this event which extended far beyond the borders of China.

Many people are familiar with this image:

However, not as many people are as familiar with the wide shot.

That’s some serious courage right there.

The June 4th 1989 anniversary holds a great deal of personal significance for those who witnessed the events.

Few people even know how most of the regular Chinese military refused orders to open fire on the protesting crowd. Hundreds of young Chinese military soldiers actually formed lines around the mostly student activists in an effort to protect them. The Chinese government eventually bypassed the regulars and instructed the Mongolian military divisions who carried out the orders.

No-one really knows how many were killed, and even the families of the fallen were too scared to speak publicly.

Those who were lost live-on in whispered memories of lore.

So many.

So young.

We remember.

…Then the tanks came….

Google MUM Search Engine – Is it Dangerous?

Armstrong Economics Blog/Technology Re-Posted May 21, 2021 by Martin Armstrong

QUESTION: What is your opinion of this new Google MUM AI search engine?

HU

ANSWER: It is for complex searches, and it is using a neural net. What you must understand is that a neural net is capable of finding things within a database. It is not capable of original analysis. IBM’s Watson was touted as having the ability to cure cancer. It failed. It could beat anyone in Jeopardy, and it could play chess. But a neural net will never actually provide true thinking in an original context.

I was creating AI during the early 1980s. I created a program to mimic a politician and let my kids play with it. It would store your answers and keep a conversation going. For example, it might ask if you have a pet. You respond, “Yes, a dog.” “Oh, boy or girl?” “It’s a girl.” “What’s her name?” “Napoleon.” It would record that info, so the next time my daughter would go on the computer, it would ask, “How is Napoleon?” She came home from school one day and saw I had the computer apart. She began to cry, thinking I kill it.

I learned how to create an AI system that would seem alive. It would have a personality. Curse at it, and it would curse back. But it wasn’t alive. It could not think for itself.  To accomplish the next level, I had to teach it how to analyze on its own. That could never be accomplished through a neural net. It takes more definitive power than just that. Still, it will never become conscious. It will not wake up one day and decide it hates my guts for some reason and wants me dead.

Google’s MUM will advance searching. However, it will not suddenly become conscious out of nowhere and rule the world. We have really evil people for that.

Face Book 32% of Global Population

Armstrong Economics Blog/BigTech Re-Posted May 7, 2021 by Martin Armstrong

There is a massive campaign unfolding against Facebook. The biggest and most stupid mistake they made was to take sides in politics by banning and canceling anyone with who they disagree. Besides all of that, Facebook has invaded people’s privacy like no other platform. They track everything you do and sell that info to the highest bidder. The number of active users of Facebook (those people who have logged onto the site in the previous month) has reached a historic high of  2.45 billion. To put this in some context, approximately 32% of the global population now uses the social media platform, and the trend line of participation is still going up. About 63% of American adults are on Facebook and 65% of the youth.

Back in 2004, when a 19-year-old Zuckerberg had just started building Facebook, he sent his Harvard friends a series of instant messages in which he marveled at the fact that 4,000 people had volunteered their personal information to his nascent social network. “People just submitted it … I don’t know why … They ‘trust me’ … dumb fucks.

In 2019, Facebook was ordered to create new layers of oversight for its collection and handling of users’ data by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC detailed a privacy settlement with the social network. Still, the FTC buckled to the lobbying power of Facebook. The F.T.C.’s commissioners approved the restrictions in a 3-to-2 vote but drew very sharp criticism for not going far enough. The FTC utterly failed to curb the data collection of the world’s largest social media company. Republican and Democratic lawmakers even said that the settlement was a drop in the bucket for Facebook, The FTC failed to limit a core practice that has repeatedly raised privacy questions, and since they have ventured into manipulating elections precisely as the Russians were accused of back in 2016. The people simply being victims of this cancel culture is growing exponentially.

So just how stupid are people? It seems to be very stupid. Back in 2018, the Observer revealed how Cambridge Analytica, a company funded by conservative billionaire Robert Mercer, acquired and exploited the data associated with 50 million Facebook profiles. It appears that while Facebook had been aware of what the Observer described as “unprecedented data harvesting” for two years, it did not notify the affected users.

Dave Hunt represented Clackamas County in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2003 through 2013. Hunt was the former Democratic Leader, Majority Leader, and Speaker of the House for the State of Oregon. As a legislator, Hunt the sponsor of a bill criminalizing sex trafficking in 2007.  Hunt is currently a lobbyist working to influence the very chamber he left.

However, even more ironic in 2011, Dave Hunt use his position to support and vote for HB 2714.  That bill created the crime of commercial sexual solicitation, the exact crime police used to charge Hunt when he was arrested and cited.

OREGON – Former Oregon House Speaker and current Clackamas Community College board member Dave Hunt was cited by Portland police in an undercover sex traffic sting operation in April. Contacted by the Portland Tribune on Monday, May 3, Hunt said, “I don’t think I should talk about that.”

Hunt’s attorney, Micheal De Munis, said, “Mr. Hunt denies the allegations, but respects the criminal justice process and will refrain from saying more until he has his opportunity in court.”

Clackamas Community College said Hunt was taking a leave from the board.

As a legislator, Hunt was one of numerous sponsors of a bill criminalizing sex trafficking in 2007. In 2011, he also voted for HB 2714, that bill created the crime of commercial sexual solicitation, the crime for which he was arrested and cited.

The Portland Police Bureau issued a press release May 1, saying its Human Trafficking Unit had cited eight men in an operation conducted in April. Officers posted online decoy ads on known human trafficking websites, and the subjects who “contacted undercover police officers to arrange payment for sexual acts” were criminally cited on the charge of commercial sexual solicitation.

The release did not name those cited, but said the list was available on request. The Portland Tribune requested the list and received it Monday morning, May 3. It included “53-year-old David Hunt of Milwaukie.”

Reporters at the Portland Tribune then requested and received a portion of the police report. The suspect has the same full name, date of birth and home address as the former speaker and current CCC board member. It said he was arrested and cited on April 28 by two Portland police officers at a Ramada Inn in Southeast Portland. (read more)

Jack Cashill Gives His Review of the Derek Chauvin Trial – Turning Chauvin Into A Racist Killer

Posted originally on the conservative tree house on April 28, 2021 | Sundance | 66 Comments

Author Jack Cashill has followed the intersection of the severe left and law enforcement for decades.  In his latest article he walks through the Derek Chauvin case and outlines a familiar pattern.  [Full Article Here]

Excerpt: […] “Roughly six or seven minutes before Floyd took his last breath, Chauvin had shown no signs of racism or brutality, let alone the potential for murder. To this point in the interaction, he had been polite, professional, and, if anything, too patient. “I’ll put the air on” — are those the words of a racist killer, Joe?

As Chauvin understood, attempting to subdue a drugged suspect a half a foot taller than he and 80 pounds heavier was not going to be easy. Finally acknowledging the futility of their collective efforts, Chauvin let Floyd leave the car at 8:19. “Thank you. Thank you,” said Floyd. When ordered to hit the ground, he sighed, “I want to lay on the ground, I want to lay on the ground. I’m going down, I’m going down. I’m going down.”

Rejecting the more aggressive but legal hobble restraint — cuffed hands and legs connected behind the suspect — Chauvin used the same restraint I saw applied on the sidewalk outside my office: knee on the area where the shoulder meets the neck. In addition to the officers’ body cams, Chauvin could see bystanders recording the scene. If he were intentionally violating the law, he knew he would be found out.”  (read full article)

According to witnesses who called 911, State Representative Jewell Jones was speeding down I-95 in his black Chevy Tahoe before he ran off the road in a ditch.  A woman traveling with Jones was transported via ambulance to the hospital.  However, Jones became combative with police officers who arrived at the scene.  Mr. Jones had a blood alcohol level of .19, twice the legal limit.

Mr. Jones refused to present his drivers license and then began physically struggling with officers who were attempting to handcuff him.

[The full dashcam is HERE]

The state representative then claimed Governor Gretchen Whitmer would get involved and began threatening the police.

[…] Jones said, “when I call Gretchen,” he’d need badge numbers for all the state troopers and Fowlerville police officers on the scene, according to the state police report. (NBC Report)

Prosecutors say Jones has been charged with resisting arrest, operating a motor vehicle with high blood alcohol content (.19), operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, possession of a weapon under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.
